This is the blog space I have created for my MFA studies at Glasgow School of Art. It a space for random thoughts, research, inspiration and to work on test pieces.
Let’s start with what I mean when I say “studies at GSA”. For me being here might well be a challenge. I not been in a taught environment anything like this since just after school when I started to study Physics at college. I didn’t enjoy being in that space, the feeling that I was back at school and my choice of subject was poor for me. No surprise that I lasted just 2 years on that course before I bombed out and found a job. When I worked on my undergraduate studies in Photography this was distance learning so, while I re-learned how to study, how to manage my time, how to research and so on, it was a space which was self-managed but also quite isolated. GSA is a taught environment which already feels very vibrant and so FULL of people. I am in a new city, meeting new people both students, lecturers and staff, in a new series of buildings, doing lots of travel while I look for somewhere to stay, applying for funding and more. Maybe this discomfort I feel ties into the isolation we all felt during the Covid-19 pandemic. I think it will take some getting used to.
